Our Palliative Care Team have been shortlisted for a prestigious national digital healthcare award.

The HSJ Digital Awards have shortlisted The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in the Optimising Clinical Pathways through Digital category, celebrating the changes and innovation going on to transform and redesign clinical pathways for patients.

Our Palliative Care Team created a digital system that helps them check in with patients who need support during their cancer treatment every four weeks. This system allows the team to see who needs more intervention, so they can offer appointments to those who need them most and avoid unnecessary visits for others. As a result, the team has improved symptom control and may even have helped patients live longer.

43% of new patients to our Palliative Care Team chose to access the digital system. Patients who agreed to digital follow up through the system recorded over 900 scores last year – out of those, 314 did not need a clinical appointment, saving the equivalent of 40 follow-up clinics in 2025 and allowing our team to prioritise our most unwell patients.

Dr Dan Monnery is a Consultant in Palliative Medicine at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (pictured third from right). He says: “We’re honoured to have been recognised by the HSJ Digital Awards for this work, which we developed in collaboration with University of Liverpool and Healthcare Communications, part of Cisco. Establishing this new digital system has been transformative for our patients and the way we deliver their care. It’s been well received by patients who can record their symptoms quickly and easily and our team are now able to offer the right level of support to each patient.”
