I joined the Trust in August 2023 and was fortunate to step directly into my specialised role as Early Phase Clinical Research Fellow, which was a perfect fit for my passion and experience.
Since qualifying as a doctor six years ago, I've explored a wide range of specialties, including respiratory, haematology, acute medicine and many more. But from my days in medical school, I’ve always been drawn to oncology, and my experiences looking after patients with complications of their cancer and cancer treatments solidified my passion.
The idea of not just treating patients but also contributing to cutting-edge cancer research has always been a driving force for me. This role allows me to do both in a setting where research meets compassionate care and it’s incredibly rewarding when you see patients benefit from experimental treatment. I also have the opportunity to be involved in translational research and take a lead role on early phase clinical trials which is so interesting.
I’ve learnt that early phase clinical research is a particularly emotive area of cancer research. However, I really value the opportunity to build strong relationships with our patients as we support them through their trial journey. The emotional intensity is balanced by the potential to make a difference in their lives and progress research into new cancer treatments.
Clatterbridge really stands out for its extraordinary dedication to patient care. The empathy and commitment shown by staff, particularly within our team, is impressive. The leadership of Professor Ottensmeier, Dr Sacco and Professor Palmer in driving forward exciting early-phase research - including cancer vaccines, other novel immunotherapies and targeted therapies - creates a very inspiring environment to work in.
To anyone wanting to work in this field, don’t let a lack of specific experience in early phase research deter you. We value experience in caring for cancer patients and a solid understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP). What’s more important is your enthusiasm for our research, your eagerness to learn, and your commitment to working collaboratively as part of our team. We can teach the specifics; what we need is your passion and dedication.
